I tried to like Fablehaven, but I couldn't stand the little boy character (I can't remember his name). It's a good idea for a story, though.

They finally got Fablehaven in my local library, and after waiting my turn, we borrowed a copy of the book. In my family, we never buy books without reading them first. This one is a keeper!! Each of the characters relates and talks with the others so startlingly realistically (except perhaps the grandmother -- her lines are just a bit too expository, as if she's talking for the audience's sake and not the kids). Anyway, small quips asside, this is a tremendous first novel. The action scenes are done right -- just the right amount of mayhem -- just the right amount of peril. And the way he works with actions and consequences simply rings true.

On his website, Mull mentions that several studios have been asking about the movie rights. My advice is DON'T SELL THE RIGHTS!! The chances that a screenplay writer could actually capture the truthful feel of the characters and their reactions and interactions in the book are next to zero. Take a lesson from the Ella Enchanted movie and simply don't do it.
