Wow.

I googled WASP and it brought me to your page.
WASP can be used in the sociological context describing a "white upper crust" sort of society type. I used it jokingly at work (I work in Northern Virginia=WASPVILLE) and it offended someone in the same way.

I was at lunch and I said something like "What is it with the Northern Virginian WASPS and their black pepper? Must they season everything with it?" She was so mad she reamed me out for being prejudiced.

I am Spanish and Jewish. This was a first for me.

I agree, having gone to prep school and having been refered to as a WASP my whole life, I feel confident in saying that the majority of people, especially in New England, but really all along the East Coast think of WASPs as upper class caucasian Americans who are from well established families. However, New Hampshire is not predomintaly as "WASPY" as are places like Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Northern Virginia, and other parts of the middle Atlantic and coastal South. The WASP term that Bill is referring to is really early twentieth century. WASPs are not skinheads and most are certainly not racist although they seldom have the opportunity to interact with other races (you know prestigous schools, country clubs, summers on nantucket and all that don't really provide the sort of environment in which multicultural diversity thrives).

WASP is a term specifically used in my college sociology textbook(Maciounus, 2006, Prentice Hall, p. 295), with the highest concentration of WASPs found in... Utah.

As a follow-up to this post, I guess I should point out that a discussion about it took place on the message board. The voting there almost unanimously agreed that WASP doesn't have racist connotations. I think it's just this one guy who takes it that way.

Eric,

You're right, and snooty WASP Bill is wrong. WASP is an acronym, and I take it only for what the acronym stands for. Well, snooty is implied, so maybe I see SWASP when I read WASP. I envision white tennis outfits with sweaters tied around their necks, not white hoods.
