That "early reviews" reasoning behind the online critics ban is nonsensical. By asking critics to hold reviews until opening day, the studio can control (as best they can) ALL the buzz surrounding a film. If a review slips out early, the control goes elsewhere. And while many people have decided by opening day if they will/won't see a movie - in other words, before they read a review (in other words still, day-of reviews, positive or negative, don't mean much to the opening weekend crowd) - any early reviews might change their perception of the film, a perception the studio has carefully constructed. Which is why you can have something as guaranteed a critical hit as "The Simpsons Movie" still be kept from the press as long as possible. Is it because they fear allowing negative reviews more time to dissuade audiences from seeing the movie? That must be it - if all pre-release reviews of a movie were positive, the studios wouldn't care about them appearing before opening day. I was familiar with this story from MaryAnn Johanson's site and I always thought how astonishingly petty it seemed. I was wondering though - was the Silver Surfer fiasco the start of it all, or were there problems going back to before then? P.S.
