As humans, our brains are wired to categorize and find similarities and differences. (We can’t seem to get computers to do it, that’s what makes computer image recognition so pesky and difficult). So we look up at a cloud and see similarities to — I don’t know — a pine cone riding on a frog. Anyway, you see two movies. There are so many aspects that you could notice about a movie, that if you search, there are bound to be a few frieky coincidences.

This is how many conspiracy theories occur. If you’ve ever looked at the list of similarities between Abe Lincoln and JFK, you might be a bit weirded out. But John Leavy at U Texas claimed to be able to come up with a similar list with ANY pair of US presidents. There are just so many bits of info about a president that some of them are bound to be similar. If you focus only on the similarities, it will seem like some kind of conspiracy, but there’s really nothing to it.

On April 3, my roommates and I watched The Mist just before seeing The Ruins.

Both had people confined to a space where stuff grabbed them by their legs and where somebody ended up stabbing somebody else.
