A video of Paris Hilton that doesn’t make you hate her
Adam McKay is Will Ferrell’s regular collaborator, and the director and co-writer of “Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights,” and “Step Brothers.” So he’s obviously a talented guy. I don’t think I appreciated just how talented he is, though, until I saw this video, in which he actually makes Paris Hilton funny.
This is her campaign video, written by McKay as a response to John McCain using Hilton’s image in one of his ads.
(I know I’ve been posting a lot of videos lately. I don’t know why! At least this one isn’t about Hitler, though.)

I don’t think she’s very smart, and I don’t think she’s a very good actor, so a video in which she *appears* to be smart causes me some major cognitive dissonance.

I still think Paris (both the Hilton and the city) is a useless cist on the left butt-cheek of humanity. I doubt I am alone in that sentiment.

I still dislike Paris, but I must admit that this video is pretty funny. Good thing she had McKay to write this for her.

It’s amusing.
August 6th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Yeah, sorry, I still hate her. I really like Adam McKay though?
August 6th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
I think this is kinda awesome.
August 6th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Meh. Still don’t like her.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
I still hate her but “I’ll see you at the debate, B*tches” made me laugh.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I approve of her energy policy more than I do either candidates’ ideas. What is wrong with me?
August 6th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I’m with Debbie. That was awesome.

Isn’t it a sad commentary on the state of politics when one of the savviest, most self-aware, and most memorable campaign ads comes from Paris Hilton?

It’s become trendy to hate on Paris, and I don’t necessarily disagree with this. However, why hate on Paris in particular? It’s lazy comedy and a lazy rant, like making fat jokes about Kirstie Alley or hashing out yet another Marshall Mathers / Ali G “white hip-hopper” parody.
I’m inclined to be extra fair to Paris merely to offset all of the irrational hatred. Don’t attack the messenger that our consumer and celebrity culture is vapid, soulless and shallow. It’s a well-known secret in shallow celebrity circles that Paris is pretty nice and that about 50% of her exquisite stupidity is an act. Like Eminem or Marilyn Manson, she’s banking on her image, and laughing all the way back.

In case I wasn’t being very clear above, my point is that there are so many other potential targets of hatred that focusing on Paris seems irrational. Worse, it’s uncreative.

I saw this video yesterday, and I had the same thoughts: that’s one hell of a funny scriptwriter she had for this. Almost every line in it was funny (except the crack about needing to read the travel magazine about seeing where the best spot is to tan. That was just dumb).
Knowing who wrote it and what else he’s worked on sure does clear things up.
Personally, I don’t hate Paris any more than I hate other no-talent celebrity hacks. I’m an equal-opportunity hater.

I hate Paris Hilton because the only reason she is a celebrity is because she is famous. She’s not an actress, she’s not a musician, she’s not a writer. Her only talent is attracting attention. What is it about our culture that will bestow celebrity status on someone like this?
And, yes, this vide makes me hate her even more. (Or maybe its just the poor script). It completely misses the point (on which I won’t expound, because I don’t want to turn Eric’s site into a political platform).

Wow, Paris is WAY good at reading a teleprompter and pronouncing SUPERHARD words like “technology”.
Great. Now I have that song Kip sings in ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ stuck in my head.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Nate, that’s not why she’s famous. She’s famous because she’s famous.
And because she’s rich.
Us poor slobs have to actually work towards improving any gifts or talents we might possess or acquire to the point of notoriety. Usually there’s some talent famous people can credit for their popularity, such as singing or acting.
I’d like to believe she’s not the norm, but then again I’d also like to believe there is a tasty salami sandwich waiting for me in the fridge.
(..there isn’t ..*sigh*)

Actually, if the news reports are to be believed, Paris filmed the ad in four takes and memorized her own lines. Considering the low standards that people judge her by, that’s pretty good. She’s still vapid and talentless, but at least she knows how to poke fun at herself sometimes.
August 7th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
As vapid as she is, it deeply scares me that someone this shallow promotes a energy plan better than the major candidates.
Think about that. That is scary on a level that makes most horror look tame. Either Paris is smarter than Obama and McCain…… or …. we are just so screwed.
August 8th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Know what scares me the most? The fact that her fake energy policy is probably the best one I’ve heard from in this entire campaign season…
Oy.
August 9th, 2008 at 2:01 am
Actually, it wasn’t Paris that was funny in the video, it was the Crypt keeper and Yoda. But still, “see ya at the debate, B!@#%es!” inspired another chuckle. And Paris is famous for being in a homemade porno video, which makes it all the more sadder.

Paris’ “energy plan” is actually completely unworkable. The Energy Information Administration, the statistics branch of the U.S. Department of Energy, estimated last year that opening the coasts to offshore drilling would have no significant impact on oil prices before 2030. (See http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/22/MN6M11SN60.DTL&hw=off+shore+drilling&sn=002&sc=800) So it doesn’t make any sense to drill offshore to offset gas prices until new technology can take over, as Paris suggests. I just wanted to give Robert F. Ludwick and David Foster reason to believe that Paris (and McKay) isn’t actually a better policy maker than either McCain or Obama.
August 9th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Considering how much of the problem is speculators, even just opening it up would drive prices down.
