Eric’s Bad Movies: ‘Jaws: The Revenge’ (1987)
“Jaws: The Revenge” has been one of the most requested films for Eric’s Bad Movies at Film.com, and I’m pleased to announce that its day in court has finally arrived. My on-the-ball editor over there even went to the trouble of locating the film’s nonsensical, explosive climax on YouTube and has included it with the column.
One of the reasons I put this movie off for so long was that it came out in 1987, and I’ve already covered three films from that year: “Superman IV,” “Over the Top,” and “Masters of the Universe.” The last two were back-to-back and just a few weeks ago, so I wanted to put some distance between them and “Jaws.” Ideally, I’d like to hit a film from every year since about 1980, just to keep things broad and wide-ranging. In the meantime, was 1987 the worst year in the history of film? You’d think so.

Quite possibly (at least in recent years). Exhibit A: The top-grossing movies of the year list, led by “Three Men and a Baby,” the lowest #1 movie of the year since the ’70s.

It’s scary that I’ve seen so many of the top fifty movies of 1987, and most of them were useless. But Princess Bride came out that year, so I guess it helps make up for all the garbage.

Oh yes, 1987 was the worst year for films: Assassination (Charles Bronson), Barfly (Mickey Rourke), Dirty Dancing (Patrick Swayze), (Oh, gosh, even Hellraiser came out that year!), Leonard Part 6 (no need for introduction–its suckiness is self-evident), Less Than Zero (apt title), The Witches of Eastwick (EPIC FAIL), Teen Wolf Too (Bad movie? Check…), Robocop (overated), don’t forget Steel Dawn (Swayze sucks again); heck, The Last Emperor wasn’t even that great…
If it weren’t for Empire of the Sun, Fatal Attraction, Three O’Clock High, and Raising Arizona, we could have just revoked that year of films. I was so lucky to be in France at the time.

Speaking of bad movies in 1987, don’t forget Leonard Part 6! Arguably the worst comedy ever crafted by Hollywood.
