Friday movie roundup – May 8

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Hey, nerds! There’s a new “Star Trek” movie — and it’s not just for you! Regular people will like it too. It’s one of the best all-out entertaining movies so far this year.

Only one wide-release film dares challenge it, and it’s a comedy called “Next Day Air,” which wasn’t screened for critics in Portland. I’ll have a review later this weekend.

In limited release, there’s “Outrage” (review at Cinematical), an intriguing documentary about U.S. politicians who vote against gay rights yet who are secretly gay themselves — like Larry Craig, though the film “outs” several others, too. The film was made by Kirby Dick, who also made “Twist of Faith” (Catholic priest abuse cover-ups) and “This Film Is Not Yet Rated” (MPAA irregularities). Basically, if you’re a hypocrite, Kirby Dick will eventually find you and make a movie about you.

“Gigantic” is a self-consciously quirky indie comedy about quirky people doing quirky things. If you’ve never seen a single indie comedy before, you might enjoy this one.

Catching up with a couple older wide releases, “Fighting” is better than you’d think (though still not very good), while “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” is reprehensible and not funny.

Follow me on Twitter! If you want to! No pressure.

“Transjester”: dressing as the opposite sex for comedy. “‘Tootsie’ is a transjester movie.” “Dame Edna is a transjester.”
