:No doubt many such writers do a fine job of keeping their feelings about the movies separate from the perks they receive from the studios."

Somewhere on the internet, Harry Knowles is crying.

I agree that the right thing to do is disclose fully any connections one might have. I worry a little about this being rule making by the FTC with the force of law rather than application of fraud and/or payola laws already on the books, but whatever.

In the meantime, I'd be happy to work out a deal with you Eric to promote your site on my site ... well, email me and we can discuss the terms ... er, I mean details.

Very well explained, Eric. These rules make a lot of sense from an ethical perspective. The internet might be "new" and "different" in some senses, but the concept of receiving a gift to help persuade the recipient to favorably discuss the matter has been around for a long time. Informing the audience about the gift lets them know that they might have to take the review with a grain of salt.

Even better, it means that the reviewer will probably write a more objective review since he knows that his reputation is on the line. If a blogger writes only gushing reviews about the products he receives freebies for, he will lose audience members that see him just as an advertising mouthpiece rather than a critical reviewer.

I for one look forward to Eric's review next year of Saw VII: Still Sawin'! much more than the movie itself!!!

Really timely, Eric, and also interesting since you came up in a conversation I had this morning with a few of my blogging friends.

We were discussing the new rules and it made me think of press junkets, specifically the piece you did a few years ago on becoming a junket whore.

Nicely done, Eric and right on. As a member of the twitter attack barrage, I think my point got lost in all the hullabaloo. I just think film critics, reviewers, bloggers or whatever should disclose when they are comped to visit a film.

It absolutely has an effect on a writers bias and should be noted in the review and left for readers to decide what they make of it.
