There are two new wide releases this weekend, “Clash of the Titans” and the Miley Cyrus vehicle “The Last Song.” The films are pretty different. One of them features a hideous, terrifying sea monster; the other one is “Clash of the Titans.”
“Clash of the Titans” is dull, generic, and mostly devoid of fun. And it’s a ripoff in 3-D. If you must see it, you absolutely should not pay extra for 3-D. It was shot in 2-D, with the 3-D effects hastily added after the fact.
“The Last Song” (review at Film.com) is about what you’d expect from a Miley Cyrus movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel.
In limited release is “The Greatest,” a somber drama that premiered at Sundance last year and is just now comin’ around to theaters. Though the cast is fantastic, the writing is simple-minded and obvious, like a rough draft.
Finally, there’s one of Hollywood’s Shameful Secrets®: Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?,” which didn’t screen for critics, as is Perry’s custom. Janet Jackson is in it. Review to come. UPDATE: Review has come, at Cinematical.
