Somehow, here’s a new Snide Remarks

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Hey, look! It’s a new “Snide Remarks” column! And it’s about the time when I was really sad! It’s called “The Great Depression.” That’s a play on words, see.

Also of note, as long as we’re noting things: The National, an English-language newspaper in the United Arab Emirates, has quoted me in a story about “Where the Wild Things Are.” The reporter contacted me by e-mail, and I believe this is the first time I have been interviewed by someone writing for a newspaper in Abu Dhabi. I wasn’t entirely convinced, before this, that “Abu Dhabi” was even a real place. But it is! It has a newspaper and everything!

Late links to ‘Snide Remarks,’ etc.

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Whew! Such a day it’s been! But enough about my personal life. Here’s a new edition of “Snide Remarks,” entitled “How Sweat It Is,” about my perspiration habits.

Over at Film.com, “Mystery Men” is the subject of Eric’s Ten-Year Itch. I also have a review of Hollywood’s Shameful Secret® “The Collector” there. And at Cinematical, here’s my review of “Aliens in the Attic,” plus an item about the word “retard” being removed from the DVD version of “Miss March,” plus an item defending Netflix’s honor against a cranky old man who writes for Time magazine.

By the way, the “retard” item led, rather improbably, to my being interviewed by NPR’s Neda Ulabi. Her story will air sometime this week. I will say something about it on Twitter (which means it will show up in the right-hand column here) once I find out when.

Links to new ‘Snide Remarks’ &c.

Monday, July 13th, 2009

To everyone’s great surprise, a new “Snide Remarks” column appeared today, dully entitled “Strange Encounters with the Neighbors.” Please to be clicking and reading enjoying.

Over at Film.com, “Point Break” is the subject of this week’s Time Capsule. Last week was “Forrest Gump” (a movie I hate, it turns out), and the week before that was “Do the Right Thing.” Just in case you’ve fallen behind.

Items of Mondayness

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

This week’s SR®, “Ribald for Your Pleasure,” is available for perusal. And what do you know, so is a new edition of Eric’s Time Capsule at Film.com, celebrating the 27th birthday of John Carpenter’s “The Thing.” This groundbreaking horror film spawned many sequels, including “The Item,” “The Stuff,” and “The What’s-It-Called.”

And hey, what do you also know, I forgot to pimp last week’s edition of Eric’s Ten-Year Itch at Film.com, which addressed Disney’s “Tarzan,” one of the first films I reviewed for the newspaper I worked at in those days, whatever it was called.

And hey, that’s it.

Mmm… Twitter….

New amusing-anecdote-based ‘SR’

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Hey! What’s that busting out all over? Why, I do believe it’s June! June needs a stronger brassiere.

But the point is, here’s a new “Snide Remarks” column, “In Which It Is Hard to Throw Away a Desk.” It’s the one that first appeared in “Something Cleverish,” the fundraiser book for Christian and Stephanie Nielson.

And over here at Film.com is Eric’s Time Capsule, addressing “Psycho II,” released 26 years ago this week. For those who were asking, the Eric’s Ten-Year Itch column is only going to be an occasional Time Capsule replacement at first, but will gradually take over completely by the end of the summer.

And if you’re interested in dying a slow, delicious death, I’d like to recommend the Cookie Cake Pie, which is exactly what it sounds like. The combination possibilities are endless! Mom and I are going to try it when I visit home this weekend, and I’ll let you know how it turns out, unless it kills me.

New ‘SR,’ new Film.com feature

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Well, lookee here! It’s a new “Snide Remarks” column, bearing the title “Leaving the House, and Why I Don’t Want To.” Perhaps you will enjoy reading it. There’s only one way to find out.

In other news, we’re starting a new occasional feature at Film.com called “Eric’s Ten-Year Itch,” in which I re-watch a movie that I reviewed exactly 10 years earlier and discuss how my views — and how the movie world, and society in general — have changed since then. First up is a re-examination of “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace,” which was released 10 years ago tomorrow, if you can believe that.

For now, “Eric’s Ten-Year Itch” will appear in place of “Eric’s Time Capsule” on occasional Mondays, with the aim of eventually replacing the Time Capsule altogether. I hope you find it interesting, or at least not irritating.

The things and stuff of Monday

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Hey! What are you doing here? Go read the new “Snide Remarks” column, entitled “Receding Airlines”!

And then also read this week’s edition of Eric’s Time Capsule at Film.com, about “Losin’ It,” which was one of those teen sex comedies so popular in the early 1980s! Teens sure loved sex in those days!

And then also visit People Who Sit in the Disability Seats When I’m Standing on My Crutches!

Let’s all pretend it’s Monday

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Usually I provide these links on Monday, but I didn’t this week for a variety of reasons, none of them interesting or funny.

Speaking of not interesting or funny, here’s a “Snide Remarks” column about the 10 types of Internet comments.

And lookee here, it’s Eric’s Time Capsule at Film.com, this week dealing with the original “Hairspray,” released Feb. 26, 1988.

Finally, two reminders: If you’re on teh Twitters and want to follow me, my name is EricDSnider. And don’t forget “Something Cleverish,” the book of humorous essays including a brand-new “Snide Remarks” column, all proceeds from which go to the Stephanie and Christian Nielson recovery fund.

Long-weekend link dump

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Whew! Welcome back from the long Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend! I hope you enjoyed your romantic evenings/sober reflections on the majesty of our republic. I know I did!

Catching up on stuff: Here’s this week’s “Snide Remarks,” entitled “PETA, PETA, Kitten Eater,” which as you can see features our favorite SR subject.

And here’s this week’s edition of Eric’s Time Capsule at Film.com — “9 1/2 Weeks,” released 23 years ago this Saturday. It stars Mickey Rourke, who could collect an Oscar on Sunday. He’s virtually unrecognizable from the way he looked in “9 1/2 Weeks.” But then again, aren’t we all?

And hey, what with traveling back from Oxford and everything, I neglected to provide a link to LAST week’s Eric’s Time Capsule! It was “Cruising,” released in 1980. Apparently Eric’s Time Capsule is focusing on salacious, mediocre films from yesteryear.
