Let ‘Snide Remarks’ chase away the Monday blues

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Got a case of the Mondays? I know I do! I have to watch “Made of Honor” tonight, and you know how I feel about pun titles.

Speaking of how much I hate pun titles, this week’s “Snide Remarks” is called “Between Barack and a Hard Place,” and while this makes at least two weeks in a row that “Snide Remarks” has dealt with politics, I promise I won’t write about politics next week. (That’s an easy promise to make, because I’m not writing one next week, because I’ll be in New York. So there.) I don’t like to write about anything twice in a row, but I think you’ll agree that today’s column’s primary subject matter really needed to be addressed

Your Monday delivery of ‘Snide Remarks’

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Treadmills, border fences, and bilingualism are among the topics discussed in this week’s edition of “Snide Remarks,” which has the horrible title of “Defence Is De Answer.” Seriously, that’s one of the worst yet.

In other news, we switched to a new server this weekend, almost living up to the promise of no downtime in the process. There are a few kinks in the system — for example, I can’t send any e-mail from my EricDSnider.com account — but that’s none of your concern.

If you find you can’t post comments on the site, that’s because the new host is still propagating, and your ISP is still accessing the old location, and — OK, it’s complicated. But comments should be enabled for some of you, not enabled for others of you, and enabled for one and all within 24 hours or so.

Finally, this is the last week to take the surveys and help us make EricDSnider.com a better place. I really appreciate all the feedback we’ve gotten so far. Some of the comments have had some really good ideas that I’m definitely going to implement and take credit for. There are three surveys; take any or all that apply to you. This one is for all visitors to the site; this one is for “In the Dark” newsletter subscribers; and this one is for “In the Dark” podcast listeners.

‘Snide Remarks’ + Olympics = jokes about China

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Did you hear they’re having the Olympics this year? And that they’re in China? Well, then you have the background necessary to understand this week’s “Snide Remarks,” entitled “The China Monologues.”

And did you hear I’m conducting some surveys? Well I am! Many of you have responded already and have given some excellent feedback. There have been about a dozen times so far where I’ve read a comment and thought, “Wow, that’s a really good suggestion. Why didn’t I think of that before?” So thank you for your input.

If you haven’t done the surveys yet, won’t you? Please? This one is for all visitors to EricDSnider.com (that means you!); this one is for “In the Dark” subscribers; and this one is for “In the Dark” podcast listeners, whether they subscribe via iTunes or just listen to it here on the site every Friday. If all three surveys apply to you, feel free to take ‘em all. And hey, thanks!

Airport-related ‘Snide Remarks’ will chase away the Monday blues

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This week’s “Snide Remarks,” entitled “WTF, TSA?,” is about airport security. I’m pretty sure I’m the first person ever to make jokes about air travel, so I feel pretty good about that.

It may also interest you to know that I reviewed “Superhero Movie” over the weekend, and that it’s not horrible! The review is at Film.com.

‘Snide Remarks’! Movie reviews!! Etc.!!!

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

All that business with South By Southwest is over now, so we’re back to our regular programming here at EricDSnider.com. That means we have a new “Snide Remarks” today, entitled “Artificially Swedened” and addressing the pivotal issue of the furniture in my apartment. Surely you have been concerned.

And hey! Look over here! Reviews of “10,000 BC” and “Horton Hears a Who!”! I sort of apologize for not reviewing and warning you against “10,000 BC” sooner, but at the same time, it is not needful that you should be commanded in all things. I mean, seriously.

More bloggy stuff later today.

Monday stuff: ‘Snide Remarks,’ a late review

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Matters of race, politics, abortion, and homosexuality appear in this week’s “Snide Remarks,” and my Utah readers probably already know what that means: It’s about Sen. Chris Buttars (R-West Jordan). If you’re not familiar with Buttars, you’re in for a treat. Please feast on this week’s column, entitled “A Crock of Buttars.”

And speaking of loathsome, vile things, my review of Larry The Cable Guy’s “Witless Protection” is up at Film.com. The final paragraph reads: “If you find any of this funny, please rush out and see ‘Witless Protection.’ And please don’t ever do anything that would make me aware of your existence. I prefer not to know.” This was toned down (at the request of my editor) from my original conclusion, which was: “If you find any of this funny, please rush out and see ‘Witless Protection,’ and then please take your own life. It is the only honorable course of action.” I accept the need for the alteration, though I stand by my original position.

‘Snide Remarks’ Presidents Day special: Part 2 of the Mississippi story

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Hello, and welcome to Presidents Day. Many furniture stores and car dealerships are having special sales in honor of Washington and Lincoln, so I hope you will take advantage of that, in their memory.

Meanwhile, “Snide Remarks” brings us the eagerly awaited second half of the Oxford Film Festival story, ingeniously titled “A Visit to Mississippi, Part 2.” It, too, contains a reference to Lincoln, also in honor of Presidents Day.

Here’s that Southern-fried ‘Snide Remarks’ you ordered

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

It’s a two-parter! But only one part has been published! You have to wait until next week for the second part! It’s not as exciting as my choice of punctuation would indicate!

New ‘Snide Remarks,’ some late reviews

Monday, February 4th, 2008

“Snide Remarks” is back from vacation with a timely entry entitled “A Message from Mike Huckabee.” I say it is timely because I suspect a year from now no one will remember who Mike Huckabee is. (Please?)

In other news, here are reviews of Hollywood’s Shameful Secrets© from this weekend, “The Eye” and “Strange Wilderness.” Neither is as bad as you might expect, given their Shameful Secret status. Certainly there are movies far worse that were screened for critics.

Also, here’s a review of “Falling,” the new film from Mormon Cinema godfather Richard Dutcher. The film’s two-week run at the Gateway in SLC is over, and I’m waiting to hear back from the publicist about future plans for it. I’ll let you know what I find out. It’s a good film, though quite different from everything Dutcher has done before.
