Ben-Centennial

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist - 412

Episode #44

"Ben-Centennial"

Season 4: 9/7/97

Katz wants to do something big for Ben's 25th birthday, but Ben doesn't want any fuss. Meanwhile, Laura finds a helpless baby bird, which she nurses back to health. Unfortunately, its chirping drives Katz nuts, so Laura calls Ben -- the first time she's ever called him, which really throws him off ("Do I have any pants on in this dream?") -- and asks him to take care of it. He is reluctant, but agrees ("I'll do it, I'm just telling you it's going to explode"). Then he wants to keep it. Laura wraps up Katz's stapler and gives it to Ben as a birthday gift, in exchange for the bird. Over the credits, Katz sings "Happy Birthday" on the guitar and asks Ben if he wants to blow out the pilot light.

  • The Smothers Brothers: Tommy (the one on the left, with no moustache) and his brother Dick argue about their childhoods; Katz can't get a word in edgewise; Tommy asks Dick if he's going to talk about his impotence, but he means to say impudence; Dick got a pet dog, but Tommy got a chicken, which killed Dick's dog.
  • Sam Brown: Thinks horses should watch people races -- "Urine-Encrusted Raincoat"; "Part-time Whore," etc.; didn't get much approval as a kid; he'd get an A and hear, "Is an A gonna clean your room for you? Is an A gonna find a husband for your sister the cyclops?"; bullfighting involves no bravery whatsoever; his mom thought his using drugs was just at "phase"; she's oblivious to everything.
