Bystander Ben

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist - 201

Episode #7

"Bystander Ben"

Season 2: 1995

Ben is proud to have been quoted in a newspaper article as a witness ("No more than three shots, and possibly as few as none, were fired"), and he considers himself to be a part of the media now. He considers getting a more exciting first name than Ben, like Zeus; dad suggests Ben "The Over-Reactor" Katz. He finally admits to Katz that he didn't actually see the crime. "It's not so much that I lied as they printed the lie," he says, adding that "when a woman comes up to you with a notebook and asks you questions, you better have something good to say." Katz sends Ben to his room, and over the closing credits, they discuss things they're not proud of doing, such as not recycling (Katz), and flushing dirty socks down the toilet (Ben). Also in this episode: Ben asks Laura whether she thinks he has more of a swimmer's body or a diver's body; he points out the strangeness of having hair on his legs but not on his chest; Katz tells a joke to Stanley and Julie and then has to explain it.

  • Kevin Meaney: Dad would stop the car so the kids could pick up stuff other people had thrown away; would use too much lighter fluid at barbecues, making birds fall from the sky fully cooked; had five kids and only one bathroom; on family vacations, his mom would just point out weird-looking people.
  • Steven Wright: Calls Laura from out in the hall; may have intrusive thoughts; grandparents came over from Europe and the family never adjusted to the time change; used to eat lunch at midnight ("Lunch is the OTHER twelve," his mom would say); will throw the desk out the window if Laura doesn't look at him; throws a penny at Ben -- the first time Ben and one of Katz's patients have actually interacted; the next was in #410, when he talked to Conan O'Brien for quite a while.
