Community Theater

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist - 516

Episode #61

"Community Theater"

Season 5: 10/19/98

Katz is auditioning for a community theater production of "Love's Retreat" (not a real play, by the way). He tries to practice with Ben; the line, "Why do you think I have my pants altered on such a regular basis?" keeps breaking him up. Ben gives constructive criticism: "You're not what they call in the theater business 'talented.'" But Katz forges ahead, getting Julie to practice the scene with him. In the scene, which is very lovey-dovey, Julie accidentally calls him by his real name instead of his character name, and then they kiss (which the script calls for). Meanwhile, Ben gets Stanislavsky's book on acting and has Katz remember painful experienes ("having a heavy thing dropped on my head" is one), which prove to be painful for Ben too. Then he remembers a pleasurable experience, then accidentally remembers the day JFK got shot, and sees his ex-wife in the background. ("Odd..." he says suspiciously.) Finally, Ben and Katz both go to the audition, where Ben interrupts and Katz can't stop laughing. NOTE: No clue is given as to who played Mr. Hammer, the theater director.

  • Tom Kenney: Was raised on Fat Elvis; women threw their bras at him "because he needed them"; thought the Beatles were an imitation of the Monkees; L.A. can be crippled by two drops of rain ("the Southland pounded by rain!"); news stations will cover a 1.9 earthquake for nine hours, and become the "What If?" news: "What if it had been a 9.1? Would you survive? Would your family survive? What if you worked at a store that sold nothing but sharp, jagged knives made out of glass?"
  • Ron Lynch: Seems to be here only to fill time -- he only appears in one scene. He wants to do a wave with Laura in the waiting room; uses a lie-detector toy while talking to Katz.
