Theory of Intelligence

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist - 211

Episode #17

"Theory of Intelligence"

Season 2: 5/5/96

Katz is asked to speak at an adult education class on his theory on intelligence ("It's probably a mix-up," says Laura). His theory is that a person's intelligence increases immediately after an intense emotional experience. Ben tries to prove this by inflicting pain upon himself, among other things. Katz tries to test Ben's intelligence by asking basic "If I give you two apples..." questions; it devolves into Ben asking, "What do you have if you have three apples, two oranges, sliced pineapple... and a bottle of Chardonay." "You have a good time, my friend" is Katz's reply. Ben goes to the class with Katz (the sign says "Dr. Cats") and laughs before Katz tells the joke, interrupting him ("Keep the flow," he encourages). In the end, instead of asking a question, he encourages dad to "tell the story where I poked my hand."

  • Joy Behar: Has a lot of anger, particularly because therapy for the last six years doesn't seem to be helping; had a dream where Katz was a turtle and another turtle bit off his head; upset that Katz dresses "provocatively" -- tight shirt, pants, shoes and socks; got a part in "Taming of the Shrew" and is very nervous about screwing up; wants to run lines in therapy session; tells Katz he has an odor about him.
  • Brian Kiley: Tried for three years to get his wife pregnant; noticed she was throwing up every morning and putting on weight -- "She had a drinking problem"; baby is always throwing up or has a bottle in his mouth -- "It's like living with a nine-pound college student"; since carriages are too expensive, they're having him be an "indoor baby"; as a kid played doctor and got caught, but it was Wednesday, so he was just golfing; had a dog named Patches because it was always trying to quit smoking; upset that his neighbor always talks about his sex life ("Like I wasn't watching!").
