Waltz

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist - 514

Episode #59

"Waltz"

Season 5: 10/5/98

As Katz and Ben prepare to go to Katz's niece Rachel's wedding, Katz discovers that since Uncle Morty is dead, he'll have to dance with Rachel -- and he can't waltz. He asks Laura to teach him, and she says no but eventually agrees, for $200 (and he can't touch her). He insists he can't learn: "I can step and I can count, but I can't step AND count." Meanwhile, Ben goes to Vic's Video Palace and rents a waltz instruction video from employee Todd (played by Todd Barry). (He also wants a preferred membership, though Todd tells him no. He also wants to meet Vic, but as Todd tells him, "You don't need to see Vic.") Ben is crushed when he learns Katz has already learned to waltz. "It's nice to strip someone of their dreams," he says, and a tiff ensues. Later, Katz suggests they waltz together as a way of making up, which they do, until Ben dips his dad and drops him. NOTES: Some unusual things about this episode. First, as the 14th episode of this season, it's the first time Comedy Central has ordered more than 13 episodes in one season -- a sign the show is doing well. For another thing, when Laura is teaching Katz how to waltz, we see her legs -- which, oddly enough, we have rarely (if ever) seen before. Also, Stan and Julie at the bar are not in this episode. Finally, Todd Barry's appearance as Todd the video store clerk is the first time a guest has appeared not as himself, and not as a patient, but as another character outside the office. Todd was eventually to become a regular character, like Stan and Julie.

  • Ron Lynch: His last check bounced, so he plays a recording of himself pretending to be a bank president, assuring Laura the checks are still good; wears a huge fake moustache; suggests maybe he can open up through a puppet; then the puppet wants to talk through a puppet too ("I have felt manipulated all my life"); to boost his self-esteem, he got testimonials from celebrities about how funny he is (that's all he cares about), but they're all really him impersonating (not very well) Oprah Winfrey, Bob Hope and Bill Clinton.
  • Susie Essman: Mother looks like a big Eastern-European woman; family is loud and screamy, but turns British when she brings boyfriends home; "men are simple, women are complex.... We love you, but in a patronizing way"; cousin Judy is an obsessed Zionist; sees ex-boyfriends and thinks, "I talked baby-talk to this man?"; had a boyfriend from the Bronx whose accent turned her on; Aunt Sylvia and Uncle Ben hate each other and don't even realize it.
  • Todd Barry: Appears as Todd the video store clerk, bantering with Ben about stuff.
