Friday movie roundup - Dec. 7
Hey, did you realize that Dec. 1 was the anniversary of the first “In the Dark” podcast? Neither did I! But it was! Not to toot my own horn, but the podcasts sure don’t suck as much now as they did a year ago.
This week’s only wide release is “The Golden Compass,” which I’ve reviewed for Film.com and previously blogged about here. Children are unlikely to be driven to atheism by it, as they will be spending most of their time trying to figure out what’s going on.
In limited release but widely hailed as a likely Oscar candidate is “Atonement,” starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. It is very good. It’s based on a novel that does not have the promotion of atheism as its goal, so that’s a selling point.
Finally, there’s “Juno,” a quirky, snarky, and very funny film about a pregnant teenager. It’s in L.A. and New York now but will go wide soon. It’s well worth looking for, and is a dark-horse candidate for the Oscars (particularly in the screenplay category).

I’ve been wanting to see Juno for a couple of months. I’m glad you gave it good review…..but I’m a little worried that it won’t go wide (live in Nevada). There isn’t as much buzz about it as I thought.
