Angry Letter: ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’
Someone named Katrina (not the hurricane) did not appreciate my negative review of “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” Her e-mail reads more or less the way you would expect an e-mail from someone who loved “Alvin and the Chipmunks” to read.
Dear Eric Snider,
I just read your review of the Alvin and the Chipmunks and you have made me extremely mad because you ,yourself, have no idea what you are talking about. Before you try to critizes a movie you need to watch it first. Theodore DID NOT eat Simon’s pop. That is impossable, seeing as how Theordore is the green chipmunk and Simon is the blue. Simon didn’t even eat Theordore’s poop after saying it was a “raisen.” He spit the the poop out and said ” You owe big time.”I just saw the movie last night and it was written so that it would fit with the cartoon. You know the one called Alvin and the Chipmunks. If you read the dedication at the end of the movie you would of seen that Alvin, Theodore, and Simon were created 50 years ago. You must of not grown up watching the cartoon because if you did you would of seen all the jokes that came from the cartoon that were in the movie. And any one who agrees with you has never seen the cartoons either and has no education. So how about you spend your money and go watch the movie and then write your review.
Big Fan of the Chipmunks,
Katrina
She is correct that I accidentally reversed the roles of pooper and poop-eater in my review. I sincerely regret the error and have fixed it now. As if Theodore would ever eat Simon’s poop! That is totally something Simon would do, as any faithful viewer of the old cartoons would of known.

Who cares who ate the poop? The point is that poop was eaten! Although Katrina is making a big point about the poop being spit out. I’m not sure that it makes it any better that the poop was not actually ingested.

He didn’t eat the poop? Oh, well that changes everything! Eric, go back and give that movie an “A”.

Eating poop? Was John Waters directing this movie?

Unfathomable that chagning who ate the poop, or pop, should discount the rest of your review…the good news is it got you this letter! THANKS!

2 chipmunks, 1 cup?
(sorry)

I grew up watching Alvin and the Chipmunks, but if I ever had any desire to defend their honor it died long ago.
I just don’t get it.

Ah ha! Our kind contributor has pointed out the fatal flaw in the American education system, and the real reason we have been falling behind the kids from . Make that kids from . Alvin and the Chipmunks! The effect of watching the cartoon is education - therefore, we need to rebroadcast the cartoons again, and this time force everybody to watch it. That, should help us catch up in the Smart Race.
As for the poo - was it really Simon who did that? How emblematic of the movie. The ultimate in lazy jokes, and they manage to screw it up. The fat guy (that was Theodore, right?) always is the guy who eats without thinking. The smart guy is the one to correct him. It’s comedic law. It’s the raison d’etre for fat dudes in movies.

Um, Neil, in this instance … well, don’t you mean “raisin” d’ete?
(Could. Not. Resist. Sorry!!!!)

One of my personal pet peeves is demonstrated in this letter: “would of” instead of “would have.” I see this so often on-line it drives me crazy. Thanks for letting me rant here.

Wait. So, if I understand Katrina correctly (and that takes an awful lot of mental effort and grammatical correction), her main arguments for why this is a great movie are as follows:
1. The poop was not ingested, it was merely tasted.
2. All of the jokes in this movie were recycled from the old cartoon.
3. Anyone who found the cartoon funny as a kid will immediately find this movie funny as an adult (since anyone whose sense of humor changes and matures has “no education”).
Classic. Also, ditto on the “would of” and “must of” pet peeve. We truly are becoming an Idiocracy.

I share your peeve, Nate.
Power, brother!

Heck, I’d be hostile if my name was Katrina, too.

“I just saw the movie last night and it was written so that it would fit with the cartoon. You know the one called Alvin and the Chipmunks.”
Did anyone else think this was the best part?…anyone…? If not, then you ,yourself, have no idea what you are talking about.

Ohhh…zingmeister…trying to get–image–out of–my head—arrrrrggghhhhhh…
But seriously, doesn’t everyone remember the classic song that Alvin and the ‘Munks sang called “Gout de Raisin” back in the day? C’mon, those guys were always singing about poo ingestion. Just when we thought that classic humor was dead and buried! Man, I’m so glad that I never had a childhood…

I don’t ever recall the Chipmunks eating each other’s poo in the cartoon.
Katrina, huh? Is she still walking on sunshine?
December 19th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
And besides, even from just watching the trailer, the movie was not written like the cartoon. No one in the 80s had that smart-a$$ Gen-X humor that the trailer is riddled with. They never said “dude”, they never ate feces, they never sang any songs by the Pussycat Dolls.

“And any one who agrees with you has never seen the cartoons either and has no education.”
Erm, Katrina: I agree with Eric. I am working on my doctorate. Sorry to disappoint.

“That is totally something Simon would do, as any faithful viewer of the old cartoons would of known.”
My husband and I are still laughing about this last line. Would of, indeed!

ok…..i’ve seen the movie twice (little cousin obesessed too much!) so i should know if the chipmunks are good or not and basically, they are! i mean they’ve got all the tricks in their favor:
• they’re cute
• they sing good (for chipmunks)
• they dance good (again, for chipmunks)
• and they’re totally hypnotizing
point made, this is a really good movie and i think katrina’s right.
(oh and by the way, in the movie, theodore*the fat green one* pooped the poop, and alvin*the cute one with the big yellow A* stuck the poo in his mouth and spit it out after dave was gone. he never digested it, and simon had no part in this “poo matter”. there!)

Wow…I wish I would have read this before I met Alvin at the mall the other day. Yes, we met Alvin & the Chipmunks at the Provo Towne Centre Mall, where my nephews were in heaven. I could have solved the whole question!! Darn me for not checking in here regularly!!

I’m sorry this is unworthy of an angry letter in my opinion. It doesn’t matter if he swallowed the poop or not it still went in his mouth. That’s desisting. I’m a fan of the original “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” Fan or not still desisting.
