Eric’s Bad Movies: Spice World

This week’s edition of Eric’s Bad Movies at Film.com recalls a shameful period in our nation’s history: the time when for some reason a lot of people liked the Spice Girls. Want to read my assessment of “Spice World”? Oh, yes you do.

  1. Karen Says:

This movie came out in the heyday of my youth. I caught Spice Girl Mania in Italy (we didn’t have a radio in our hotel room, but we did have “The Box - la televisione musicale che tu controlli”, and the Italians kept requesting Spice Girls songs), otherwise I don’t think I would’ve paid them much attention.

Anyway, when my friends and I were young and foolish, we thought it would be amusing to dress up like them and see their movie at the dollar theater. We never did do that. I’m not even sure we saw the movie because nothing in that review sounded at all familiar…I guess good sense can overcome youth and foolishness every now and again.

  2. Jessica Says:

I have seen this probably close to fifty times. Frightening, I know! I worked at a mall movie store when it came out on video, and the studio paid for us to play it all day for the first week, and twice a day for the rest of the month. Welcome to hell!

  3. Turkey Says:

Poor Rick Astley. He looks so frickin’ old now.

  4. Scott Says:

The music video for ‘Wannabe’ is actually interesting, because it is a single, 3-minute long camera shot with lots of various activities going on in the background while the Girls lip-sync their way thru the song. Turn the sound off, though, or else you’ll get that song stuck in your head again for DAYS.

But an entire MOVIE of them? ::shudder:: Eric should get a medal.

  5. Shelby Says:

I don’t care whose grave you swear on, I don’t believe the bit about the aliens.

  6. Skizat Says:

This was a freaking awesome review. Many tears of laughter and condolence were shed.

  7. Ampersand Says:

My sisters and cousins and I went through a phase where we actually liked this movie. I remember renting it and watching it in my aunt’s basement. Yes, we spent honest-to-goodness real money supporting this travesty of a movie.

Please don’t hold it against me. I was only 12.

  8. Dave Says:

Scott–I recall seeing “Wannabe” mon Pop-Up Video once, and there were actually three cuts made, so it wasn’t a full 3-minute long video. Looks like it, yes, but thbat’s the magic of editing for you, I guess.

An ex-girlfriend made me rent that awful movie once, and I never ever forgave her for it.

  9. Jenn Says:

“Spice World” is actually my guilty pleasure movie! I don’t know what it is about that movie, but it makes me giggle everytime I watch it. I even have it on my ipod. I don’t know if it’s one of those movies that is so bad it’s good, or if it’s just me……okay, it’s probably just me!!

  10. Heidi Says:

That was one of the greatest bad movie reviews I have ever read. I kept wanting to read excerpts of it to my co-workers but realized all the people around me were too old to remember the Spice Girls and the mania and all that. I personally never understood it and never watched the movie.
Now, however, I kinda wanna watch it .. at 3 a.m., partially drunk and with about 10 friends so we can make fun of it all together. To bad I’m old now myself and staying up past 10 p.m. constitutes “staying up late” or else I would actually do it.
Thanks for the great laugh Eric.

  11. Deep Says:

A bunch of us guys rented this once on a lark, split a bottle of Cuervo, turned off the sound and laughed uproariously throughout the whole thing. This is a classic movie to use for the game where everyone else fills in the lines, MST3K style.
Also, the “toy bus, a la Dukes of Hazzard” scene is priceless.

  12. Jake Says:

I saw this. A friend of ours played a bartender. The only thing I remember about it was the Meatloaf cameo as a bus driver if I’m not mistaken, where he says ‘I would do anything, but I won’t do that or something along those lines. Vomit inducing. Thanks for the hilarity.

  13. Chocolatestu Says:

For one of your upcoming Bad Movie Reviews, I recommend “Christine”, the 1983 film based on Steven King’s book. I’m watching it now, and… wow. That’s all I can say. Wow. At least it can give you a few good laughs. Pity they’re all unintentional.

  14. Patrick Says:

Darn… Rick Roll’d again. Very clever, Eric!

  15. Eric D. Snider Says:

Wow, I just noticed that. I didn’t do it. That would be an editorial decision, I guess. We’re very big on propagating already-worn-out Internet memes, apparently….

  16. Dave the Slave Says:

Wasn’t Madonna going to try out to be the last Spice Girl? I heard they were gonna call her “Old Spice”…

    *buduhmp-chink*

  17. card Says:

Oh geez. I didn’t even know what Rick Rolling was. I had to look it up on Urban Dictionary. That’s hilarious!
