Weezer’s ‘Pork and Beans’ video: a tribute to the YouTube Era

This has racked up a few million hits since being posted on Friday, so maybe you’ve already seen it. But if you haven’t, and if you’ve spent any time at all over the last few years looking at the various famous YouTube videos, you should take a look.

It’s the video for Weezer’s new single “Pork and Beans” (album hits stores next week), and it features cameos by an impressive number of YouTube celebrities: the “leave Britney alone” guy, the fat kid who lip-syncs the Romanian pop tune, the “Chocolate Rain” guy, Miss Teen South Carolina (”Some U.S. Americans don’t have maps”), and on and on. (There are several I’m not familiar with.) They’re the real folks, not impersonators, and they really interact with Weezer and with each other specially for this video. It’s cute, and it’s a terrific song about individuality from the always-terrific Weezer to boot.

That was awesome… thanks for bringing it to my attention. :)

Wikipedia lists all of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pork_and_Beans_%28song%29#Music_video

Interesting video. Now I need to see the guide to point out all the references I didn’t get.

  4. GWGumby Says:

Apparantly Turkey posted that link while I was watching. Thanks!

  5. card Says:

Awww, too bad the Potter Puppet Pals didn’t make it.

  6. Clumpy Says:

Weezer is usually interesting, though they haven’t released anything particularly deep or compelling for nearly fifteen years.

  7. Ken Says:

Ehh… I didn’t really like it. The video just seems to scream out “Look at us! We’re Weezer! We’re really hip and cool! We are into silly viral videos like all of you hip young people are! Like us please!”

The song’s alright. But they haven’t written anything really great since their “Pinkerton” album.

  8. Dave the Slave Says:

    “from the always-terrific Weezer “.
True that, home boy. True that. :-)

  9. Rob D. Says:

I love Weezer and this video is really clever. I’ve heard 4 songs off the new “Red” album and it’s pretty good. The “Blue” album and “Pinkerton” were amazing though.

  10. Jenn Says:

How do people not like Weezer?!? I loved this song the minute I heard it & now I won’t be able to get it out of my head the rest of the night!! ;)

  11. Paul Norman Says:

Hmm. When I clicked the play button, I got a black screen with a message saying the video is no longer available. Was there a copyright issue?

  12. Lowdogg Says:

    Awesome video.

  13. Clumpy Says:

    @Jenn:

The song in and of itself isn’t bad, but it’s not really dramatically different from anything we’ve seen from Weezer in the last few years. They could write a hundred songs like this in their sleep.

  14. Lowdogg Says:

And I would enjoy each one. The last album had some great tracks. I’ve never looked to Weezer for anything more than enjoyment.

  15. PDXJRG Says:

The great thing about Weezer is they don’t give a hoot about what you think.

  16. Amp Says:

PDXJRG, I know who you are.

  17. Jenn Says:

Amen to that Lowdogg!! May Rivers Cuomo keep writing songs in his sleep…

  18. Clumpy Says:

    @Lowdogg, PDXJRG

Hey - more power to you. Even in a decade-long slump Weezer’s still better than most of the schlock out there.

  19. Patrick Says:

Nice Eric, didn’t know you liked Weezer.
