Eric’s Bad Movies: Bio-Dome (1996)

Anyone who is a fan of Pauly Shore better stop reading now!

OK, now that zero people have stopped reading, I’ll tell you about this week’s edition of “Eric’s Bad Movies” at Film.com. It’s “Bio-Dome,” the last of a string of Shore comedies from the mid-’90s, and by all accounts the worst of the bunch. I had seen snippets of it on TV before, but this was the first time I’d attempted to watch the whole thing. It was hard.

Kudos to those readers who correctly predicted this entry based on last week’s clues! I like the part where some people said it was “definitely” someone else. You’re definitely wrong! I haven’t decided what next week’s Bad Movie is, so no clues this time.

Oh! Perhaps you will be interested in this “Snide Remarks” column from 2003 in which I met Pauly Shore in person and lied to him.

I was going to guess Bio-Dome too, but it was made in 1995, and you said late 90s. ‘95 is the middle of the 90s, not late 90s. :P

  2. Christina D Says:

Oh snap, I guess Rotten Tomatoes is incorrect, it was made in 1996 not 1995. I guess that’s what I get for looking at RT. Dang.

  3. Eric D. Snider Says:

Actually, I said “second half of the ’90s,” so 1995 still would have qualified.

  4. notJoeKing Says:

Can I leave a reply just to gloat about guessing the actor and the movie? I think I just did… :)

  5. Dave Says:

“and it stars one of those people where you go, ‘I can’t believe there was ever a time when America thought this man was funny.’ ”

I eliminated Pauly Shore based on this clue because, really, I didn’t think America EVER thought Pauly Shore was funny. Twelve-year-old boys, sure…but America?

  6. Christina D Says:

I guess you’re technically correct, Eric… but I can’t be the only person who, when thinking of 1995, thinks that it’s smack dab in the middle of the ’90s, rather than in the second half. I’m just sayin’. :P

By that reasoning, are ‘93, ‘94 and ‘95 the mid ’90s?

  7. Momma Snider Says:

That was one of your funnier angry letters at the end of that Pauly Shore column, too. Or maybe not funny, exactly, but stereotypical.

I don’t know that I’ve ever actually seen a Pauly movie, but I remember a commercial in which he was doing the monkey dance and was just too unappealing to watch. I don’t know exactly what it is about him, but he looks malformed somehow. Which doesn’t necessarily keep him from being funny, but if he’s unfunny in addition to being grotesque, I’m glad he’s in the past.

  8. Sarah Says:

I’ve always mixed up Pauly Shore and Rob Schneider. Are we sure they’re not the same person?

  9. Laylabean Says:

    Eric,

You are a brave, brave person to knowingly and willingly inflict such a horrible movie upon yourself all for the sake of you readers. We thank you and are in awe.

  10. Laylabean Says:

    Oops - YOUR readers.

Way to mess up my tribute, typo.

  11. Curt Says:

I always thought “Freddy Got Fingered” was the worst movie you ever had to endure. Did “Bio-Dome” beat it?

  12. Jenn Says:

The only Pauly Shore movie worth seeing is “Encino Man”…….and only on a Saturday afternoon when you have nothing better to do……& if you just concentrate on Brendan Fraser instead of Pauly…..& try to imagine Sean Astin saying lines from “LOTR” instead of the crap they have him saying…………….

Okay, I give up……..there is no Pauly Shore movie worth watching…….

  13. Kourtney Says:

That angry Pauly Shore letter is a gem! Especially the part about how you can tell he’s funny and famous because he gets lots of chicks and has no house payment.

  14. Rob D. Says:

Eric’s right about 1995 being in the second half of the year, since it’s the sixth year of the 90’s. Funny review, but did you have to take a political jab in a Paulie Shore movie review?

  15. Skizat Says:

Haha, political jab? Is the “Vietnam War - Great idea?” debate still raging?

Or were you referring to something else?
