‘Snide Remarks’; also, gloating
Here’s your piping-hot delivery of new “Snide Remarks,” a saucy little number entitled “I Learned It from Watching You” that lists some of the more important things that the films of 2008 have taught us. It includes visual aids, which as you know is caused by visual hiv. (What?)
I would also like to mention that I’m seeing “The Dark Knight” today at noon, and, more to the point, that you are not. Sometimes I don’t bother to get excited about movies because I know I’m going to see them all anyway, so what’s the point in getting worked up about it? But I’ve been looking forward to this one. Digital IMAX projection, a press-only screening, no rowdy unwashed masses detracting from the experience — this is one of the perks of being a film critic. It balances out things like “Meet Dave.”
Finally, a reminder that if you’re on the Twitter you can follow me if you want to. My Twitter name happens to be EricDSnider.
This week’s “Snide Remarks,” including the audio version, is here.
The audio version (i.e., the podcast) is also here.

Just bought IMAX ticket for Dark Knight today, but I won’t be seeing it until Sunday.

Your “virtual hiv” joke was subtler than I thought – so subtle, in fact, that at first I thought that it was a mistake. Nope – the intentional lack of capitalization sets an important pattern. Well, the sun is rising – guess it’s time for bed.

Here’s hoping that you’ll have the review up today.

Man, I am jealous that you are seeing The Dark Knight today, on an IMAX screen no less.

Eric,
There are already about 15 reviews of The Dark Knight on rottentomatoes.com. Any chance you will publish your review before Friday?

Eric,
Why don’t you text updates through your cell phone while you’re watching the movie? Let all your readers know how awesome it is while the critics around you threaten to jam the cell phone down your throat?
Seriously, though, I know you sometimes read reviews of other critics before you watch them / review them. Do you ever feel the pressure to review a movie a certain way based on the reactions of other critics (either to follow the trend or buck it?)

“I know you sometimes read reviews of other critics before you watch them / review them.”
You know incorrectly. I make a point of not reading any reviews before I write mine. I occasionally notice what the current score is at Rotten Tomatoes, but that’s as far as it goes.

I don’t mean to gloat, but Hellboy and Batman are currently tied in the ratings. Both started at 100% for a week or so, then dove about 10% to a respectable high 80s score when the people who weren’t enthusiastic enough to see it a week before it opened started to post their reviews.
Either way, the superhero film seems to have progressed quite a bit since the likes of Spider-man, which I loved when it came out but now seems a little clunky and childish. Spider-man 2 stresses me out – being late for things and disappointing people is stressful in real life. Three (and, if Dark Knight is anything like people are saying, four) hero movies this year are better than anything we could have imagined a few years ago, even with good-to-great Spider-man and X-Men movies being released.

So where’s your review for The Dark Knight? You must have been out of the theater for at least an hour.

Didn’t your mother ever teach you that it wasn’t nice to tease?
I think I’m ending up seeing Mamma Mia instead, since there is nary a ticket to be found within a 45 mile radius for Batman!!! My drooling over Christian Bale in the Batsuit will have to wait for a few more days…….:(
