Eric’s Bad Movies: ‘Judge Dredd’ (1995)

I hope you appreciate my restraint in limiting Sylvester Stallone’s appearances in Eric’s Bad Movies to once every few months or so. Between him and Van Damme, I could keep myself occupied for a year. Sly shows up in this week’s entry, “Judge Dredd,” a futuristic action disaster from 1995, and so does Rob Schneider, which seems altogether wrong.

Speaking of Eric’s Bad Movies, I put out a call for suggestions earlier this week, and y’all have been responding with some good ones! (And by good, of course I mean terrible. Good for the column, terrible to watch.) Feel free to keep ‘em coming, though it will help the Laotian kids in my sweatshop narrow things down if you’ll note the guidelines before making your recommendations. In a nutshell: it needs to be awful, a theatrical release, not too obscure, not already reviewed by me, and generally considered bad not just by you but by people in general. I know that narrows it down a lot, so don’t feel bad if you can’t think of anything. Thanks for your suggestions!

Mama Mia! I haven’t seen it on your list (maybe I missed it), but honestly it could be one of the worst movies of all time. Pierce Brosnan defines tone-deaf! I could not stop laughing as they continued song after terrible song. Definitely should be on the list! Love your writing Eric!

Sorry, APV–Eric already reviewed that one.

Seriously people, try checking the archives or using the search function on this site before belting out a suggestion. As for my suggestion: Street Fighter. It’s a thwofer, a Van Damme movie and a video game movie.

You know, you could have reviewed “Demolition Man” at the same time, since it’s pretty much the same movie…

People may be thinking that your rule of not having reviewed it before only applies to Eric’s Bad Movies. They don’t see it on THAT list so they make their recommendation for a movie that came out last year that you reviewed. I don’t know HOW they think this but they do.

Every time Eric asks for suggestions it amazes me at what people request. I am amazed. Not angry or frustrated, but stupefied.

It’s really quite the social experiment.

Yes, it’s astonishing how little research people put into their “Bad Movies” requests.

I don’t necessarily expect anyone to do any research. But if you’re obviously ignoring the guidelines I mentioned by naming films released in 2008, or TV movies, or films that everyone knows are generally considered good, then yeah, I have to wonder if you’re typing just to hear yourself type.

If you need another Stallone movie, and god knows why you would. I recommend Cobra. If you need some Segal movies to balance out the Van Damme/Stallone ones, On Deadly Ground, The Glimmer Man, and Fire Down Below are all spectacularly aweful. His previous work is bad too, but it’s just generically bad 80s action movies, nothing compared to the insanity of his later work when he plays various takes on a butt-kicking pacifist Buddist.

Well, there you’ve pretty much summarized the entire blogging/blog commenting enterprise. :D

Anyway, yeah, Seagal’s first five movies were a lot of fun, but On Deadly Ground is transcendent in its awfulness.

  10. Jacob Says:

You think this was worse than Demo Man, which also co-stars Rob Schneider? Wow.

wow, that review made me laugh so hard that my co-workers are wondering if they should walk quickly and in an orderly manner to the nearest exit. I really don’t know how Eric sits through these movies; I would cry and call for mommy if I had to…
