Mask

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist - 407

Episode #39

"Mask"

Season 4: 8/3/97

Katz takes a class in making African ritual masks ("It's not real competitive, but I think I'm winning"), and after Ben is through mocking the whole idea, he embraces it himself (as usual). He makes a couple masks of his own, and even buys a set of bongo drums, which he plays in Katz's office -- a rare instance of waiting room goings-on interrupting Katz's sessions. Also, Ben has dreams in which he kills his father, and Katz admits to having dreams about killing Ben. They discuss this at length, and Katz gives his interpretation: "You don't like me that much." Also, Katz discusses dreams with Julie and Stan.

  • Steven Wright: Does phrase association ("Take it with a grain of salt" = "Get out of here"); saw a psychiatrist when he was 9 because he was nervous about turning 10 and reaching double-digits, which is when most people die; relationships; dated a 30-year-old when he was a Boy Scout.
  • Mark Schiff: His grandmother's huge underwear, hanging over the shower curtian rod to drip-dry ("Wring it out!"); no Jewish cowboys or bank robbers ("Get down on the floor. Get up, you'll get dirty"); grandfather talked about "the old country" ("Where is this place?"); goes to bathroom at 4 in the morning, wife asks, "Where were you?"; says he went hunting; wants to tell doctor the worst diet in the world: dozen eggs, a pound of cheese, a cigar, box of salt, then he rubs lard directly on his heart.
