Thanksgiving

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist - 518

Episode #63

"Thanksgiving"

Season 5: 11/23/98

It's Thanksgiving, and something big happening: Katz's ex-wife Roz

is coming for dinner. He and Ben discuss it ("Who's Roz?" Ben asks), and also discuss the phrase

"fruit of my loins." Ben thinks Roz is the fruit; Katz explains, "Mom took an interest in my

loins, and we made fruit." Laura has no plans, so Katz invites her, even though Ben is cooking

("He's allowed to use the stove?" she asks). Once she finds out it might be awkward with Katz

and Roz there together, she agrees to come. At the bar, Katz discusses the Great Cranberry Scare of

the '50s, and how his parents had to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Roz gets along great with Laura, and thinks she and Ben are dating. In the meantime, Ben is in the

kitchen burning the turkey ("Fire in the hole!" he screams, along with some choice words that get

bleeped). Everyone winds up with TV dinners and cereal, and Roz drinks a lot of wine ("Sang de

Mer," which is French for "Blood of the Ocean"). At the end, Katz plays the guitar and sings a

song for Ben about gratitude, as well as one about Roz ("Roz/Go back to Oz/Go be Roz in Oz").

Over the closing credits, he and Ben sing "Go Down, Moses." NOTES: A historic episode in

many ways. It's the first episode to have only one patient, and the first one where the scenes

with the patients seem truly secondary to what else is going on -- Dom's scenes total about two

minutes of the total time of the show, and they're all in the first eight minutes of the episode.

And though it's not the first time a celebrity has appeared as a non-patient (Todd Barry already

broke that barrier), it's certainly the first time someone has appeared as a character this

important. It's Roz's first appearance, of course, and also the first time Laura has ever been in

the Katzes' apartment. The animation during Ben's fire scene was much more advanced than usual,

with him diving across the room and scurrying back with a fire extinguisher. Finally, with this

episode, Dom Irrera makes his eighth appearance, breaking Ray Romano's record of seven as the most

frequent guest (too bad Dom isn't even half as funny as Ray...).

  • Dom Irrera: Asks what's wrong with Katz's eye; shows him his mole; wants to know what's wrong with Katz; tells him to look in the mirror, meaning his face; thinks he's dietetic.
  • Carrie Fisher: In a moment of true "Dr. Katz" history, Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia herself) appears as Roz Katz. She gets along great with Laura, has a reasonably amiable conversation with Katz, and thinks Ben and Laura are dating (a misconception which Ben perpetuates).
  • Todd Barry: Plays the video store clerk again, this time inviting himself over for Thanksgiving dinner after Ben tells him how great it's going to be ("I love the fixin's," he says). Ben tells him no. ("Who knows what you're like outside of the video store?") Todd says he's going to stay home alone and go to www.thankful.com.
