Friday movie roundup - Jan. 18

We’ve discussed here before how January is a terrible month for new movies. January releases are almost always bad. (Movies released in L.A. and New York in December that go wide in January don’t count.) I’ve never given a January movie an A or A- — until now. I’m delighted to announce that “Cloverfield” breaks the streak! The first excellent January wide release of the millennium!

“27 Dresses,” on the other hand, is exactly what you expect from a January movie: unoriginal, tedious, and forgettable. “Mad Money” is cute and perhaps acceptable; my review is at Film.com.

Finally, Utah readers might wonder about “Falling,” the new film from Richard Dutcher (”God’s Army,” “Brigham City”). It opens at SLC’s Gateway Megaplex today. Dutcher’s P.R. folks were kind enough to offer to send me a screener just after Christmas. I said I’d love to review it, and they should send it as soon as possible, as Sundance was fast approaching. They said they’d send it off right away. Two weeks passed and I got it Tuesday, the day before I left for Sundance. So I’ll get to it when I get back.

In the meantime, keep an eye on this blog, Film.com, and Cinematical’s Sundance page  for my Sundance Film Festival coverage. It’s just like being there, only warmer!

Hey, Eric. Long time reader, first time etc. Just wanted to point out that the link to your review of “Mad Money” at Film.com just takes us to the Movies section of the site and not to the actual review. I did try to find your review by clicking around and I couldn’t, so I’m either hopelessly useless in the ways of the Internets, or your review is not up yet and you planned to update the link once it is and this whole message of mine is pointless.

In any case, to add some value to my comment, I can’t wait to catch “Cloverfield”. I had a feeling I’d like it from the trailers, and after your review I now know that I will. Of course, since I’m down in Argentina and movie releases over here tend to lag a bit, I probably won’t get to enjoying it on the big screen until some time next decade. Ah, well, such is the curse (and, strangely, also the bliss) of being really, far away from mostly everything.

    Cheers!

Seeing that Dutcher had a new movie coming out made me go back and Google him a little bit, and whoa! I did not know he had left the church. I don’t consider that a good thing or a bad thing, just a “whoa” thing.

I’m still interested in hearing how Falling is, and excited that he snagged Ving Rhames for Evil Angel. Hope these films make their way to the Seattle area, I may just go see them.
