Friday movie roundup - March 21

Happy spring! And happy Easter! And hey, what about Passover? Happy that too! I hope you weren’t planning to celebrate any of these things by going to the movies!

“Drillbit Taylor” is lousy, and “Shutter” (review is at Film.com) is even worse. The third wide release, Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns,” wasn’t screened for critics, and you know what that means. (You probably also know what Tyler Perry’s name in front of it means.)

In other news, I promise to have the final installment of my SXSW diary posted today, a mere seven days after the day it covers. If you knew how busy I’ve been this week, you’d stop hassling me (RANDY TAYLER!!) to get it done. I wish I had more time during the festivals to work on these reports, because I really enjoy writing them. Each one is like a mini-”Snide Remarks,” with the hard part done by having the topic assigned to me.

    Listen to Eric whine…

  2. Randy Tayler Says:

I believe my exact words were something like “Hey, I’ve really enjoyed these reports — will there be any more?” Something like that.

  3. Randy Tayler Says:

There may have been something about “You better be in the effing hospital,” but I can’t recall.

  4. Ben Says:

My favorite part was when he didn’t review 10,000 BC (okay, not that pressing, I know) and Horton Hears a Who (a review I really want to read).

  5. Chocolatestu Says:

Eric, I have been waiting for two weeks to hear just how bad 10,000 BC really is, and I want to know what you think of Horton as well. Who cares about the movies coming out this week? Not me! I just want to know about the stuff you missed the past couple weeks. I CAN’T SEE A MOVIE WITHOUT READING YOUR REVIEW FIRST!!!

  6. Mark Says:

I concur with Mr. CountChocula, there, as I have also been waiting for your review of Horton, to know wheteher I ought to waste money on it.
Also, Passover isn’t until the middle of April this year, but why Passover and Easter are so far seperated this year when they historically happened at the same time, I couldn’t tell you. So, save Happy Passover for then!

  7. Duke of Earl Grey Says:

Actually, Passover is not until April this year, so wishing a Happy Passover is perhaps premature.

  8. Turkey Says:

I find I enjoy Randy Taylor’s comments just as much as Eric’s. “I hate you so much” has been cracking me up for a week now. Is that bad?

  9. card Says:

If there is another movie with the title “Meet the ________,” I think I’ll go postal. It’s a terrible title in the first place, and now they are everywhere! The only good thing about it is that I am forewarned by the title that the movie will be no good.

  10. Amp Says:

I noticed that despite Passover not occurring until April, ABC is still airing “The Ten Commandments” this Saturday. That cracked me up.

  11. Chocolatestu Says:

Mark - That’s MRS. CountChocula to you. =P

  12. Leah Jane Says:

Well, Purim began at Sundown yesterday. Which is a much better holiday then passover, because it’s a lot more merry and fun, and the meal is a lot better. And Eric, I too want to see your review of Horton Hears a Who, please?

  13. Andrew D Says:

Just saw “Horton” tonight… my wife and I predict that Eric will give it a “B,” be it plus, minus, or as-is. It just didn’t seem like “A” material, but was funny and entertaining enough.

  14. Stephen M (Ethesis) Says:

On the other hand, we went to the dollar movie and caught Alvin & the Chipmunks which turned out not to be as miserable an experience as I was afraid of. So not everything was a wash this week in the “new” movies (I count “new to the dollar theater” as new too).
